Pre-Kindergarten
HIPPY (Home Instructions for Parents of Preschool Youngsters)
The HIPPY program builds on the basic bond between parents and children. Supported by easy to use activity packets, home visits, and group meetings, HIPPY parents learn how to prepare their children for success in school and beyond. Throughout their child’s year, the parent receive a progressive series of 30 weekly packets with five lessons in each packet, nine books, and all necessary supplies. Through role-playing with the parent educators, parents practice these activities. Once a month, the parents come together in a group meeting, held in their neighborhood, with HIPPY staff and other parents.
Learning and play mingle throughout HIPPY’s structured curriculum as parents encourage their children to recognize shapes, colors, tell stories, follow directions, solve logical problems, and acquire other school readiness skills. Each family served by the HIPPY program for two consecutive years will receive a total of 300 lessons.
Parents enrolled in the HIPPY model demonstrate great gains in academic stimulation of their children; in the use of toys, games, and reading material; and in encouraging their children to learn. HIPPY parents have also demonstrated greater growth in knowledge of child development and parent empowerment. HIPPY is all about giving “at risk” children and their parents hope for a better tomorrow.
HIPPY is available to parents in the following communities: Gibbs Village, Trehnolm Court, Tulane Court, Smiley Court, Chisholm, New Town, Cleveland Court, Southlawn, Regency Park, Ramer, Sheraton heights, and North Pass.
